Facts? Where are the facts? What other ingredients do you think it has? What do your labels say? The Red Devil in my town says 100%lye on the label. I need more than here-say. WOW! I’ve been making it for years too! Gee, what a coincidence! Surprisingly enough, I seem to still have all my skin intact… :-/

  2. HMTWORN says:

Was wondering. If you just pushed out the tubes of soap and let alone and cure for the full 5-6 weeks. Could you cut the bars down to size or do you need to cut earlier in the curing process?

  3. HMTWORN says:

Oh…. Thank you for sharing your talents.

  4. znieszka says:

hi I’ve just started making soap and was wondering ‘what do you use? I’ve been using caustic soda.

  6. Networkadmin77010 says:

You usually leave the soap in the molds for 24 hours then cut then you set them out in a well vented area to cure, you should make sure there is good air circ around them so all sides can dry.

Red Devil is still usable for soap making. It is just hard to find. The one that is not safe to use for soapmakign is Draino, it contains metal shavings. You can find lye online in small quantities if you search for red devil lye or just search for sodium hydroxide. I make soap for a living so I buy it in 50 pound pails for $50. But for the regular hobbyist, a 2 pound jar should do for a few batches. You can also find it at Lowes, although it is not called Red Devil, in the plumbing area.

Fantastic video; thanks for sharing. But do you insulate the soap after you pour it into molds?

Do all soaps have lye? Also why do you have to use lye. Also why do some soapers use palm oils and others don’t? Thanks

  17. Notawesomeatall7 says:

I make soaps myself and you have the option of not using lye either when making soap from scratch or purchasing from a buyer that doesn’t use it. I make pure vegan soaps and they contain only glyercine and olive oil. Some soapers use palm oil as a way to save money, personally I fuckin’ hate it because it doesn’t leave skin feeling as good as if you use olive oil. It’s just a way to save money. ALSO, many soapers use detergent based ingredients as well that dry out skin. Nasty shit.

Hate to burst anyone’s bubble but you can’t make soap without lye. ALL SOAP is made with lye but when properly measured it is not present in the final bar of soap. I think what Notawesome does is either rebatching or melt & pour. That’s when you make soap from a pre-made glycerin base or soap shreds and do not actually combine oils/butters and lye (i.e. make the soap) yourself. But at some point the base or shreds were created using lye. Otherwise it wouldn’t be soap.
